One evening in the fall of 2016, neighbors, local institutions and business owners came together to discuss shared concerns about quality of life issues on West 13th Street between 7th and Greenwich Avenues. These issues included safety, excessive amounts of trash, lack of upkeep of tree beds, and more.
The West 13th Street Alliance, Inc was formed as a 501 (c)(3) non-profit a few months later, with a mission of helping to improve the quality of life on our block and surrounding areas.
Over the course of three-plus years, The West 13th Street Alliance, Inc was able to:
- refurbish the tree beds & arrange for regular street cleaning
- establish ongoing community events programming
- develop community partnerships with NYPD, elected officials and outside institutions
- improve public safety
- renovate subway exit
As the scope of the work grew, so did the need for a new organizational structure. In 2020, Project NYC was formed as an umbrella organization to comprise The West 13th Street Alliance, Inc, as well as two new projects, Hydroponic Labs NYC and City Sky Farms.
None of this would have been possible without the help of volunteers, generous donations, grants, and partnerships with local institutions and city officials. Project NYC looks forward to the future and helping!
